History Mission

Founded in 1938, the Star of Texas Fair and Rodeo is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization whose mission is Promoting Youth Education - Preserving Western Heritage.  Over 3,000 volunteers serving on numerous committees strive to advance the mission.  The role of the Star of Texas History Committee is to preserve and exhibit the history of Austin, Travis County, the Star of Texas Fair and Rodeo, the State of Texas and the American West.

2008
  • Dodge becomes the "Official Truck" of Rodeo Austin
  • Youth Auction moves to downtown Austin at the state of the art Long Center for the Performing Arts where $820,000 was raised- an increase of 25% from previous year.
  • Star of Texas welcomes the Stock Horse of Texas Competition to its first major livestock show
  • Junior Livestock Show adds 4-H/FFA Livestock Judging Contest
  • Rodeo Austin first rodeo to broadcast rodeo performances live via internet pay-per-view with 20 states and 3 countries watching
  • General Manager, Bucky Lamb, is named Professional of the Year at the Texas Association of Fair & Events annual convention
  • Rodeo Austin claims 12 marketing awards from Texas Association of Fair & Events, including best Web site and best radio and newspaper advertisements
  • Marketing Coordinator, Jennie Richmond, is appointed to Texas Association of Fair & Events Board of Directors, making youngest board member in history
  • Cowboy Breakfast, sponsored by Farm Credit Union, sets attendance record of 7,000 people
  • Web-broadcast of Livestock Show expands with additional camera allowing for simultaneous video and audio feed of both the large and small show arena
  • Junior Market Barrow division breaks 1,000 entry threshold
  • McCarty Corporation purchases Grand Champion Steer for $50,000 at Youth Auction
  • 100X Club expands and improves with new facility layout and up-and-coming entertainers
  • Purina Incredible Dog Challenge held for 1st time at STFR and broadcast nationally on ESPN
  • Carnival expands asphalt area, breaking previous record set in 2007
  • Keith Berdoll receives "Top Hand" volunteer of the year award

2007
  • Livestock Show & Scholarship Programs expand Statewide to encompass all 254 counties in Texas
  • Team Rodeo Austin Expands adding Lance Brittan (World Champion Bullfighter) and Todd Rangel (Saddle Bronc Rider) with Chet Johnson
  • Rodeo Austin first rodeo to web-broadcast Livestock Show free via internet with over 10,000 parents, friends and fans logging on to watch
  • Rodeo Austin voted #1 non-profit organization in Central Texas by the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce (out of 4,426 non-profits in Austin)
  • GMC Catering added to Rodeo Arena
  • Sporting Clay Tournament brings in record number from sponsorships and flury sales
  • Cowboy Classic Golf Tournament has record breaking auction sales
  • $312,000 awarded in college scholarships to 58 students
  • Stan Voelker receives "Top Hand" volunteer of the year award

2006
  • Livestock Show & Scholarship Programs expand to 190 counties
  • Over 6,000 Junior Livestock participants
  • Rodeo Finals televised on FOX Sports Network
  • Entertainment budget increased
  • Team Rodeo Austin created with Chet Johnson (Saddle Bronc Rider) and Logan Knibbe (Bull Rider)
  • Dr. Charles W. Graham Western Heritage Center Constructed and Dedicated
  • OK Corral Food Court created
  • Rodeo launches AT&T text message voting system
  • $272,400 awarded in college scholarships to 51 students

  • First Youth Western Art Show
  • Over 5,500 Junior Livestock participants
  • Outdoor Stage created
  • Largest Rodeo/Concert Attendance in history on nights of Maroon 5 & Nelly
  • Beutler & Son Rodeo Company becomes the primary stock contractor
  • 100x Club is born

  • Rodeo Austin Gala relocates to Palmer Events Center & becomes one of the largest fundraisers
  • Wrangler Winter Tour - Top 20 ProRodeo
  • Livestock Show & Scholarship Program expands to 120 counties
  • Over 5,000 Junior Livestock participants
  • Miss Rodeo Austin contest begins
  • Wayne Brooks, PRCA announcer, becomes the friendly voice behind the mic at Rodeo Austin
  • $174,000 awarded in college scholarships to 36 students
  • Suann Waight receives "Top Hand" volunteer of the year award

2003
  • STFR selected as one of ten Wrangler Winter Tour sites to be broadcast to a national television audience on Outdoor Life Network
  • STFR selected as one of ten ProRodeo Xtreme Bull Riding Tour sites to be broadcast nationally on ESPN2
  • Rodeo Arena become climate controlled
  • First ever Chuck Wagon Cookoff and 5K Sunrise Stampede events held
  • Junior Market Lamb and Gilt Shows expand to serve students state-wide from 254 Texas counties
  • Ben Bendele, PRCA master sound technician, joins Rodeo Austin crew
  • Pyrotechnics and laser show added to Rodeo Arena
  • Big screen added to Rodeo Arena
  • $150,000 awarded in college scholarships to 42 students
  • Terrell Hamann receives "Top Hand" volunteer of the year award

2002
  • Rodeo expands to 45 counties. STFR contributed 1.5 million in scholarships and auction proceeds to the youth of Texas
  • First Rodeo Finals in STFR history. Top Qualifiers return to compete for the title of Event Champion or "All Around Cowboy" on the last day of the show
  • Rodeo becomes the first livestock show in the nation to completely embrace internet technology (all 4-H and FFA exhibitors required to enter livestock projects via Web site)
  • $250,000 awarded in college scholarships to 46 students

2001
  • Rodeo opened its doors to include participants from Bell, Burleson, Comal, Coryell, Fayette, Gillespie, Gonzales, Guadalupe, Kendall, Lampassas, Llano, Milam, San Saba and Washington Counties
  • Entertainment budget increases to book big-name acts such as Destiny's Child
  • Rodeo introduces "Old West Town" complete with gunfighters, chuck-wagon, corral of live longhorns and jail
  • $228,000 awarded in college scholarships to 47 students

2000
  • The first Regional Show welcomes competitors from Travis County as well as Bastrop, Blanco, Burnet, Caldwell, Hays, Lee and Williamson Counties
  • $334,500 awarded in college scholarships to 46 students

1999
  • Austin- Travis County Livestock Show & Rodeo becomes "The Star of Texas Fair & Rodeo". The name change is announced with Lieutenant Governor Rick Perry on the south steps of the State Capitol
  • $274,500 awarded in college scholarships to 49 students

1998
  • The Board of Directors decide that in 2000, all competitive aspects of the show will be open to students in Travis County's seven surrounding counties
  • $200,500 awarded in college scholarships to 114 students

1997
  • "Kids Town" created with huge success
  • $205,000 awarded in college scholarships to 93 students

1996
  • Official Fairgrounds established providing County Fair atmosphere with various free outdoor activities
  • $104,000 awarded in college scholarships to 68 students

1995
  • $100,000 awarded in college scholarships to 63 students

  • $100,000 awarded in college scholarships to 67 students

1993
  • $78,500 awarded in college scholarships to 78 students

  • The ATCLS sells the Expo Center to Travis County
  • $40,000 awarded in college scholarships to 46 students

  • $50,000 awarded in college scholarships to 47 students

1986
  • $47,000 awarded in college scholarships to 42 students

1985
  • First year for the Barbeque Cook-Off Auction, raising over $15,000 for scholarships
  • $54,500 awarded in college scholarships to 50 students

1984
  • Willie Nelson performs at the first Gala and Auction, which raises over $350,000
  • The Show features Country Western performances for the first time
  • $30,000 awarded in college scholarships to 20 students

1983
  • The Show's Board of Directors sell donated land and raise $4.5 million in private donations to build a new permanent facility. In May, Austin voters approved a 50-year lease on a 128-acre tract of the Walter E. Long municipal park. Groundbreaking on the Texas Exposition and Heritage Center took place in October, with Board Members, contractors and volunteers working around the clock to complete the facility before the March Show
  • $16,900 awarded in college scholarships to 51 students

1977
  • The Baby Beef Expo becomes the AustinTravis County Livestock Show

1971
  • L.J. Luedecke donates 21 acres of land to the Show for resale, the proceeds designated for the acquisition of a permanent facility for the Baby Beef Expo

1957
  • The Austin Chamber of Commerce takes over the annual event as a project of the Chamber's Agricultural Department

1938
  • County Extension Agent T.H. Royder works with the Chamber of Commerce to organize the Travis County Baby Beef Show, held at West 11th Street and Congress Avenue. The Show featured 16 animals
